Quantifying biological carbon export for the northwest North Atlantic continental shelves

چکیده
[1] It has been suggested that continental shelf systems contribute disproportionately to the oceanic uptake of atmospheric CO2, but the magnitude of this flux and the relative contributions of different underlying mechanisms are poorly quantified. A biological continental shelf pump mechanism has been implied; however, the magnitude of this export depends on advective transport of carbon-rich water off the shelf, a process that is difficult to observe directly. Here we use a physical-biogeochemical model for the northeastern North American continental margin to estimate the uptake of atmospheric CO2, the fraction of this uptake that results from biological processes, and the transport of organic carbon off the shelf. Our results suggest that there is no systematic difference in the area-normalized CO2 uptake between the shelf regions and the adjacent deep ocean. The advective transport of carbon-rich water off the shelf is insufficient to drive a Continental Shelf Pump in this region. Citation: Fennel, K., and J. Denitrification effects on air-sea CO2 flux in the coastal ocean: Simulations for the northwest North Atlantic
[1] The contribution of coastal oceans to the global air-sea CO2 flux is poorly quantified due to insufficient availability of observations and inherent variability of physical, biological and chemical processes. We present simulated air-sea CO2 fluxes from a high-resolution biogeochemical model for the North American east coast continental shelves, a region characterized by significant sedimen...
متن کاملComment on "Enhanced open ocean storage of CO2 from shelf sea pumping".
In a well-designed North Sea study, Thomas et al. (1) found that atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) was absorbed by continental shelf water and was eventually exported into the North Atlantic Ocean. The work confirmed preliminary observations in the same area (2, 3) and provided support for the continental shelf pump hypothesis (4, 5). Thomas et al. then extrapolated Bthe CO 2 uptake by the Nor...

متن کاملModeling the dynamics and export of dissolved organic matter in the Northeastern U.S. continental shelf
Continental shelves are believed to play a major role in carbon cycling due to their high productivity. To improve our understanding of carbon dynamics on continental margins, a dissolved organic matter (DOM) model was developed and imbedded within an existing coupled ocean circulation-biogeochemical model of the U.S. East coast. A model simulation with the DOM module was compared with the refe...
متن کاملWhat does chlorophyll variability tell us about export and air-sea CO2 flux variability in the North Atlantic?
[1] The importance of biology to the ocean carbon sink is often quantified in terms of export, the removal of carbon from the ocean surface layer. Satellite images of sea surface chlorophyll indicate variability in biological production, but how these variations affect export and air-sea carbon fluxes is poorly understood. We investigate this in the North Atlantic using an ocean general circula...
